Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a field of dentistry that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, management, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws, and misaligned bite patterns.

In our practice we do craniomandibular orthodontics.

What is TMJ/ Craniomandibular orthodontics?

TMJ is an abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint. These joints are part of mandible or lower jaw, and they make the articulation with the temporal bones of the skull. The part of the TMJ that connects the jaw to the skull is called condyle, and it is this structure that moves.

As orthodontics we can move the teeth and by consequent the TMJ too.

The main difference between regular orthodontics and craniomandibular orthodontics is that we take the TMJ movements into account allowing most of our treatments to be done without any kind of surgery or extractions (except wisdom teeth)

For the purpose of a correct diagnosis, we collect all the patient’s data such as intra- and extra-oral pictures, occlusograms, muscle palpation, jaw tracking, RP wax bruxchecker, lateral and frontal X-rays, before placing any device.

This allows a full and individual treatment plan where we can decide if the position of TMJ need to be changed or not.

As every case is different, different devices or mechanics are suggested to reach the best result.

  • Metal braces
  • Ceramic braces
  • Smilers (invisible splints)
  • TADS (mini screws)

Are the tools that help us reaching our goal of having a good occlusion and by consequence, good aesthetics.
